May 2013 - National Manufacturing Week

ATAGO - Monitoring hydration levels in athletes

The last few seasons have seen an ever increasing number of player injuries experienced in both training and match play. The clear view of physiologists and sports scientists show the primary cause to be the hydrated state of the player. When a player is not correctly hydrated the salt balance within the interstitial fluid is disturbed, changing the normal osmotic state. The reduced osmotic state outside of muscle cells leads to a shrinking of muscle cells, causing the muscle lumen and sarcoplasmic reticulum to short circuit. The effect of this can be a muscle cramp or tear. This imbalance can also change the physiological state of the body leading to cardiac impairment.

Following successful trials with international football, cricket, rugby and athletic federations, the Atago PAL-10 SPORT and PEN PRO SPORT have proven to be a vital aid to clubs coaching and fitness programmes.  Across the globe SG measurement is now viewed as the  method of choice for the monitoring of the hydration levels in all athlete types.

The intensity and frequency of matches find players struggling to recover between games and training sessions. The most significant factor is quite simply HYDRATION LEVELS which are linked to muscle glycogen restoration. These quick non-intrusive devices allows coaches and players to monitor hydration levels in seconds.  Research confirms the refractometers provide information needed to increase hydration and performance of players and substantially improve an athlete's performance in no time.

Data recording software, freely available with these devices, allows simple interpretation of data in a presentable form that will extend your knowledge of individuals hydration and bodyweight profiles. Studies conducted by researchers show clearly that  these instruments will provide the information needed to improve the hydration, performance and training programmes for individual players.
